Tuesday Afternoon

I decided last night to not get up and run this morning, thinking that I would run this afternoon when it was warmer to see how I would do in the heat, since Bonnie and I will be running on Saturday in a 5k at 5:30. I forgot though that a cold front was rolling through today and it's cooler now that it was early this morning I think. I still ran though, did 3.0 miles of run/walk at an 11:55 pace. I was really surprised at the pace because my body seemed to feel like I was doing more like a 13:30 or so pace. Still no major aches or pains anywhere.

It is such a pain in the backside to get old. I have this great Garmin 305 watch, but I'm so hard of hearing that I can't hear it beep at me to switch from run to walk and vice versa. I have to keep a pretty diligent watch on the time to know when to switch. I'm thinking of investing $30 in a Timex Ironman that I can remove the band and pin to my shirt on my shoulder so that "maybe" I can here it beep from there. Then too I can get away from having to set the Garmin to interval training and I can go back to letting the autolap feature track my individual miles, which I would prefer too.

Oh and I had great fun this afternoon trying hard not to suck cottonwood "cotton" down my throat as I was running. I wonder where those things go in the early morning, I don't remember seeing or feeling them yesterday. One of life's many mysteries.

Teacherwoman - it was good to hear from you and good to know you've been celebrating graduation just a tad. Congratulations!!!

J-Mom are you switching to decaf for real? I can't do that stuff, would rather quit totally than have to switch that way.

Hey Randy! Thanks for visiting. Good on you getting out there and running, after what your heart went through. I admire that!!! You're grandchildren are gorgeous!!! You must be a proud poppa. Thanks for the compliments...Grace is one of my reasons to run and stay healthy too. Your grandkids are going to grow up watching you stay fit, and it's going to be instilled in them. That's what I want for our daughter. It's great you are getting out there and doing all those races.

Yea, track work! Glad David could make you all chuckle a little. In all seriousness, track work has really helped me in the burst of energy, at the end of my runs, or working on hills. But, I really need to focus some on my long runs. My endurance lacks, or the good feeling of a great run after an endurance run. If you feel that getting on the track might help, not that you need it, try it once and see if you like it.

More importantly, enjoy the runs, no matter what the pace is. You're doing wonderful! and have some great race goals ahead of you. Good luck! I'll be following your training. I'm so long-winded...

Oh man Randy. If you met me in real life you would know I have a really high voice (think helium high sound) and my dad has trouble with the tones of it sometimes. I totally understand not being able to hear the beeps.

Hmm...I probably won't switch to decaf but instead just cut out at least half of what I drink. For example today I had 4 cups and a quad latte (4 shots) at Starbucks. Way too much coffee. So yes, this summer I will be detoxing and I hope to drink only 2-3 cups a day like a normal person. I have actually almost entirely cut out Starbucks but today I really needed it. :>)

A quad latte...oh wow...once I tried a double shot latte and within 30 minutes I was bouncing off the walls...I can't imagine what 4 shots would do to me....

I could probably hear your voice ok, unless you talk really soft, then I would struggle, especially in a crowded room of other people talking like in a restaurant. It's weird, I can't hear some things, but let me go out in the forrest and get acclimated and I can hear things there I would never be able to hear in other places....even with the constant ringing I have in my ears.

Love the new picture on your blog. YOU ARE NOT OLD!

I have a Garmin 201 and turned the "beep" feature off. It bothered me more than anything.

As for caffine.... just keep it in my morning brew and I am a happy camper!!

First of all, Lisa doesn't know what she's talking about :P LOL. She has a low voice. In fact I was shocked when I yakked with her because I thought she'd be talking a mile a minute and with a really high pitched voice, but nope not the case. (I love to bust on Lisa hehe)

Sounds like a good run!! Wow, 5:30am race?!? That's early!! But you're a morning person so I guess it's like nothing to you hehe.

Randy, that is how my husband is as well. He has trouble hearing with tons of background noise. That is totally normal. :>)

Yeah, I know a quad is bad...bad...not to mention what it does to the check book. Eek.

All this coffee talk makes me feel better :) I only have one in the morning and CAN"T get off it!

I think I would truly suffer if I was Lisa, that is ALOT LIsa!!! Quad :-X

Good luck TO you all who are trying to decafinate your bodies!

Randy, that yellow shirt is great! Love the new picture :)

Getting back out after an injury, no matter what it was, is hard!...but not as hard as sitting waiting to run! Great job getting out and making it 3 miles!

Now, onto the watch ....lol I have an Ironman and apparently dont know how to use it!

LMAO I just set it onto Chrono and do my Lap when I get to the 1/2 ways point as I dont know the mile markers.

Is there a way to set it to beep at a mile? I didn't think there was...if there is, I'm not going to get a Garmin :p

Man I talk alot :p

J~Mom said...

Yes, Nikki, you can set your Garmin to beep at a mile. :>)

Nikki - I think there is a way to get the Ironman to beep at a mile too, I know it will beep at different time intervals that you set it for, I'll check with my running buds and find out for you.

I understand that - if you want to rely on the beep - not hearing it is a pain. But isn't all this gadgetry a general inconvenience? Sometimes, on big runs, I just look at the watch when I start and when I finish. I guess I do not have the patience to monitor myself too closely.

Lia - I understand, but I guess some of us that are pre-disposed to numbers can focus on the details at the oddest of times. I would feel as if I'm running naked without my Garmin now.
